Close call for five on Matotoka-Kono highway

June 25, 2013 – At around 3:10pm yesterday, at a place called Masangbari, within Bankloli Hills, 5 miles to Matotoka, a fairly new ash-coloured 4 runner jeep with registration number AHW 374 skidded off the treacherous road and plunged deep into a valley.  It somersaulted with all four tyres spinning into the open sky.  The vehicle was damaged beyond repair whilst the driver and a female passenger lay unconscious and were left to the fate of bewildered onlookers.

Of the five passengers on board, all sustained serious injuries; from deep cuts to body pains and dislocated joints.  Frantic calls were made to get a rescue ambulance, to no avail.

Fortunately, a EGW trailer came by and rescued the victims.

Jusu Jaka Yawmah, our friendly poet, author, artist, and aspiring physician was on board this jeep travelling from Kono to Makeni and sent in his report whilst suffering a dislocated arm en route to Magburaka Government Hospital.

As at this time, the driver, Mr Mohamed George, a former lecturer at UNIMAK, and one of the female passengers are yet to gain consciousness.

It is imperative that the government wakes up to the dangers of the infrastructure of the Matotoka-Kono highway and fixes the problem that could have been five deaths!
