Profile of a Commodore
The newly promoted Commodore, Moses Bayemi Miller, SL 408 was procreated in Senehun village in Kargboro Chiefdom, Moyamba District 51 years ago. He got his primary education at the United Methodist Church (UMC) primary school at Bompetoke-Shenge and his secondary education at the Albert Academy and the Sierra Leone Grammar School from where he proceeded to Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.
Military Training
From 1986 to 1988, Commodore Miller did his Officer Cadet training at the Benguema Training Center (BTC) and was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 15th April, 1988. From 1989 to 1990, he successfully completed the International Midshipman Course in the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in the United Kingdom and was commissioned Sub Lieutenant.
From February to July 1994, he was at the Regional Maritime Academy in Accra, Ghana where he pursued a variety of courses including Fire fighting at Sea, Survival at Sea, First Aid at Sea, Navigation Meteorology, Ship Construction and Seamanship. He specialized in Navigation and qualified as Nautical Pilot. In the year 2000, he entered the Command and Staff College and studied at the naval faculty in Jaji, Kaduna, and was awarded pjsc. In 2001, Commodore Miller entered the Royal Military College of Science, University of Cranfield, and Shrivenham where he obtained a Certificate in Managing Defence in a Democracy. From September, 2003 to July 2004 successfully completed Naval Campaign Command Course in the Naval Command College in Nanjing, China where he was awarded a professional certificate. From 2007 to 2008, he was again in China in the National Defence University where he did a course in Defence and Strategic Studies.
Work Experience
Commodore Miller started his work life as a Medical Statistics Clerk at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation from where he taught at the Services Secondary School at Juba in Freetown.
On the 12th August, 1990, he was appointed Executive Officer (OX) on board Sierra Leone Naval Ship (SLNS) Farandugu. In October, 1994, he was appointed CO PB 102 SLNS Naimbana and in 1996, appointed Commanding Officer of SLNS Farandugu, a position he held till 1999 when he was appointed Staff Officer Grade Two (SO2) Operations, Naval Headquarters. In the year 2000, he rose to the rank of Acting Director, Naval Operations and in 2001, appointed Staff Officer Grade 1(SO1) Operations, Maritime Headquarters, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). In 2002, he again rose to the rank of Acting Commanding Officer, RSLAF Maritime Wing and in 2004, became the substantive CO of the wing. On July 1st 2008, he was elevated to Director of Defence, Training, Education and Recruitment, DDTER, in the Ministry of Defence. Presently, Commodore Miller is the Director of Defence, Logistics and Equipment Support in the Ministry of Defence.
Commodore Miller has attended several workshops and seminars both nationally and internationally and he is one of the few senior officers who have made a name for himself universally. He is happily married with three children.
