Suspension Causes Chaos at Sweissy

Sweissy in Freetown yesterday became a scene of pandemonium when the Sierra Leone Police, (SLP) stormed the area to assist in the eviction of a recalcitrant former Vice-Chairman, Mustapha Smart, who refused to abandon the place even after being suspended for two weeks for indecently assaulting and desecrating a Fullah businessman, Mr. Petit, by pouring alcohol on him.

According to the Minister of Presidential and Political Affairs of the Sweissy Jewellers Association, Y.D Seasay, the decision to suspend Mustapha Smart was reached during an emergency meeting.  He explained that the quarrel that climaxed into the suspension of Mr. Smart erupted over a business transaction between Mr. Petit, the assaulted and desecrated Fullah man, and a woman.  Mr. Sesay explained that Mr. Smart rudely interrupted the transaction demanding that the woman should do business with him, instead of Mr. Petit.  This provoked a bitter quarrel between Mr. Smart and Mr. Petit and Smart, consequently, lost his temper and assaulted Mr. Petit, pouring naked alcohol on him.  This, he said, prompted the association to suspend Mr. Smart.

Mr. Sesay went on narrating that yesterday, Mr. Smart was seen doing business at Sweissy, completely defying the suspension.  He added that Mr. Smart’s flagrant flouting of the suspension aggravated the newly-appointed Chairman of the association, Alphonso Blake, who insisted that Smart must vacate.  Mr. Sesay concluded that Smart’s violent refusal to quit the place coerced them to call for police reinforcement.
