Sierra Leone Parliament reprimands LGSC

The Transparency and Accountability Committee of the House of Parliament has accused the Local Government Service Commission of gross inefficiency.

The committee made the accusation on Wednesday 29th May in the committee room of parliament while interrogating the commission.  The indictment followed the committee’s assessment visit to the commission’s various offices throughout the country during which the committee members discovered several lapses.

Chairman of the committee, Honorable Claude Kamanda of Constituency 95 informed that during their nationwide assessment visit, they could not see adequate staff in the offices and there was no display of relevant information on the notice boards.  He expressed grave disappointment over the ugly situation which, he said, convinced the committee that the commission is woefully ineffective.

The chairman noted that the committee did not see any amount of transparency and accountability in the work of the commission, contrary to section 38.1 of the Local Government Act of 2004 which mandates the commission to provide regulatory, performance management functions to the system of decentralization.

Honorable Kamanda pointed out that although the commission is full of old and visibly weak officials, the committee is not stressing on having a youthful commission, but a vibrant one that can deliver more effective service.
