Defending Sierra Leone’s First Lady

Defending Sierra Leone’s First Lady

Charles Margai Esq., actually got the needed media hype;(against him), he had time with police officers, or yes, he was their guest for some 66 hours; he was all over the place and the international media was not spared of this political hoax by a controversial figure in Sierra Leone’s political history.  But come on, all this occurred all for the wrong reasons.  (Photo: John Pa Baimba Sesay, author, and IA China)

Margai is a lawyer by profession; one that has spent decades in a profession seen as noble as the way those practicing it appear in public.  By the way, did I ever attempt becoming one?  Sure yes, years back when I once applied.  Turned down, my next option was to chase a second degree in journalism.  And thank God, I am a journalist who knows the implications of making certain threats than being having being a lawyer and not knowing what and when to say a word.  Don’t get me wrong; law is a profession I so admire.

But hold on; when you blend law and politics, it becomes worrisome for some.  Right? Check this out – the Charles Margai Esq., political/legal life.  You see, politicians, especially those in opposition often and again keep searching for ways to gain attention.  This is especially the case when they tend to utilize the services of the media.  The world over,  politicians often try  make political gains out of an issue and thousands a time, this is done all in a bid to of winning political propaganda.  Political propaganda could be good, but cheap one could be very cheap and gets not the needed results.  Some will end up landing the perpetrator(s) in trouble.

The above scenario is no exception to what Charles Margai has been trying to achieve for the last half a decade, especially in the last three years.  The fact that Charles Margai Esq., failed to utilize the court system to seek redress over an issue he has with another citizen speaks volumes of his desire to still achieve his Plan B.  That he went thus far in threatening state security; threatening the presidency and even going far to suggest the President will not see the end of his second term clearly demonstrates his hate for country and desire to see another trying times for our country.

No need denying the fact that out of his seeming recalcitrant and clear but unhelpful combatant nature, the political marriage that once existed between his apparently dying party – PMDC and the governing APC appeared to have died politically and literally.  Even when he claims to command control over 20,000 Kamajors, he got less than a thousand votes in areas he even claimed to be his political backyard.  Margai’s decision to use the court of public opinion in seeking redress, than going to court raises some suspicion and points to the notion that he wants to bring the name and character of the First Lady and in the process wanting to be a bully and seriously exhibiting the typical African mentality where some men often bully women.  When a lawyer does such, he should be checked and properly cautioned and where necessary, be made to spend some 66 hours in police.

That he practically chose to open a ‘fight’ with our First Lady also points to the fact that, this is one of a few ways he believed he can get media and public attention.  That was the most disastrous political propaganda he could ever undertake, in my view.

The First Lady, Madam Sia Koroma has so far, for the last five to six years lived up to expectation, with his attention focused on issues dealing with women and children.  She has been a law abiding citizen and it was as such unfortunate for Margai to even show some sort of disrespect to her, because in Africa we tend to have great respect for women, but for men who are bullies.

If Margai is seriously sure of having anything that demands the intervention of the state, he should have gone to the courts.  That the much heard, but less known Media Chief  for PMDC, Bamidale Thompson could attempt to bring party politics into the issue when the whole fiasco had  nothing to do with the PMDC  shows that the PMDC is a drowning party, that  can hesitate, not, to grab a  knife just to be saved.

Was Margai right to have suggested he can mobilize thousands of Kamajors to come down town upon his instructions?  Was it legally right and prudent for him to have spoken of how the President will not see the end of his second political term in office?  Was it expedient for Margai to have used tribe and region to gain public sympathy?  It was after my encounter with the Sierra Leone Police Chief mid last week that I came to learn, Margai, with all his legal background, never actually made a formal complaint to the police on the issue; he never made a statement to the Criminal Investigations Department when he had been shouting of malicious damage and trespass.  So, why attempt to drag the name of the First Lady into some disrepute just in an attempt to win media propaganda?

And if at all he wanted police intervention, he should have known, police do not determine land ownership.  Let the lawyers go to court and fight for justice if they think they are victims.  He who is expected to know better should avoid being told ‘you ought to know better.’  Save us time to have peace and move ahead with our prosperity drive as a nation. The First Lady e name nor to lollipop….are beg.
