MP speaks on the role of MPs in Sierra Leone

The Honorable Member of Parliament representing Constituency 9 in Kenema city, Hon. Bockarie Salammy, last week said parliament is a place where the views, concerns and the needs of the people are communicated for redress through enactment.

Hon. Salammy told this medium that for someone to represent his people in parliament he or she must be a Sierra Leonean citizen, have attained the age or 21 and above, be able to speak, read and write the English language, to participate in debates and other parliamentary procedures.

Hon. Salammy said it is not the role of MP’s to implement development programs as that responsibility has long been seeded to the local councils through the councilors that communicate the needs of their people to council for prompt action.

The main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) MP opined that though it is not their duty to implement development projects, it does not in any way stop him from supporting development programs within his constituency through lobbying or the use of personal resources.

Hon. Salammy catalogued a series of development programs he has funded in his constituency ranging from the back feeding roads, bridges, bank rolling the roofing of a mosque, and promoting youths and other developmental activities since his election.

The MP described parliament as a learning institution diluted with challenges, especially for members of the opposition that are in a minority a position and that sometimes impedes on their participation in procedures.

Hon. Bockarie Salammy said that he is encouraging all to join hands in promoting development within Constituency 9 and the country itself as it is in the interest of all and the dream of the president.
