SLRTA Launches Nationwide Training for Motor Drivers and Commercial Bike Riders
Commemorating the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA) in collaboration with the Open Government Initiative (OGI) and World Heath Organization (WHO) on Saturday May 11th launched nationwide training for motor drivers and commercial bike riders in the country at the Brima Attuga Stadium, east end of Freetown. This colourful event was graced by stakeholders in the transport sector for transport operators including commercial drivers and riders in the country on the theme: Capacity Building for Road Transport Operators.
The keynote address was delivered on behalf of His Excellency, President Ernest Bai Koroma by the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Hon. Francis C. Minah. He expressed his appreciation over the efforts the SLRTA is making in addressing road safety in Sierra Leone. He said road accidents account for most of the deaths in the country. The minister maintained that government is fully committed to the road safety campaign.

In her statement, Executive Director of SLRTA, Dr. Sarah Bendu explained that the nationwide training is a demonstration by SLRTA of their commitment towards ensuring that road users are safe in the country. She pointed out that the nationwide exercise will help to empower transport operators with knowledge on precautionary measures on road safety. She expressed the need for enforcement of the rules and regulations by the police and traffic wardens.

President of the Motor Drivers Union, Alhaji Abu Bakarr Fofana commended the Director of SLRTA for her intervention into the road safety campaign. He pleaded with the enforcers to some times consider the deplorable status of transport operators and use their discretion not to punish offenders.
President of Commercial Bike Riders, David Sesay talked about the road safety pillars which he said can be achieved with collective responsibility. He praised Dr. Bendu for her laudable steps and initiatives towards road safety in the country.
Other meaningful statements from the Sierra Leone Police, WHO and the OGI were delivered. The ceremony was chaired by Ms Valnora Edwin of the Campaign for Good Governance
