As Operation WID declares a failure hundreds of traders displaced and wrecked

The Mayor of the City of Freetown has admitted the failure of Operation WID during the popular breakfast show on national television.

His Lordship, Franklyn Bode Gibson confirmed that the operation, which was geared towards decongesting the main streets of the municipality, had already displaced 400 traders from Lumley in the west, 201 from Siaka Stevens Street, and a lot more in various other areas as it enters its 100th day.

Mayor Gibson further admitted that “as politicians, they should be mindful of how the electorate are being treated,” pointing out that provisions were not properly put in place to alleviate the plight of these displaced street traders who, according to him, are currently desolate and cannot fend for themselves or their beneficiaries.

Comments from viewers show the ineptitude of the enforcers of that viable operation as everything has returned to its former state of being after a woeful waste of a huge chunk of state resources.

Observers say the operation has fastly turned out to be a way for both traffic police officers and wardens to extort vehicle owners, noting that street traders and commercial motorbikes have returned to their normal state of lawlessness as they recklessly ply the streets again.

It will be recalled that it was President Ernest Bai Koroma himself who launched the operation in January this year to ensure and maintain sanity in the capital Freetown.
