Sierra Leone Eastern Police impound 36 motorbikes
The District Traffic Officer (DTO) of Eastern Police divisional headquarters, Inspector Saidu Mike Kargbo, disclosed to journalists at a news conference over the weekend that his men have arrested and impounded 35 commercial motor bikes commonly known as Okada on Thursday May 2nd and Friday May 3rd 2013 respectively.
The dynamic Inspector Mike Kargbo maintained that the Okadas were impounded because they were plying within the Central Business District (CBD), after painting their number plates to appear as private bikes. He said the bikes will be detained as long as it takes at the Police Training School (PTS) Hastings.
He said people are of the opinion that most of the commercial bikes are owned by police and military officers of which it is not true, stressing that the reason why the bikes are being deposited at the PTS for safe keeping and will not be released within six months.
According to him, poda poda drivers plying half way will also be arrested and charged to court.
Inspector Mike Kargbo called on the general public to cooperate fully with the police by identifying bad, reckless and lawless motor drivers who are in the habit of molesting passengers, adding that drivers not using seat belts, or talking on mobile phone whilst driving or also using authorized routes will also be arrested and charged to court.
The police inspector is on record as having raised millions of Leones for the government of Sierra Leone.
