Eye Specialist raps on sanitation in Sierra Leone
Head of Eye Clinic at Connaugh Hospital, Dr. Matthew Vandi (in photo), the only highly trained eye specialist in Sierra Leone’s government service, has revealed that improper sanitation and malaria could lead to eye related problems. He made this disclosure on the occasion of World Malaria Day 26th April, in an exclusive interview with this medium.
Dr. Vandi expressed the need for proper sanitation as a preventive measure against malaria and subsequent blindness in suckling-children in particular. “Yes, cerebral Malaria affects the visual centre within the brain”, said the senior eye specialist. He said in most cases, patients do not recover, adding that proper sanitation could prevent further blindness in the country. He underscored that most people do not know that malaria causes blindness.
Dr. Matthew Vandi has called on the public to take preventive measures such as the usage of bed nets towards a wide spread prevention from mosquito bites to save the sight of citizens, in particular, our children.
