Washington D.C., Tuesday 30th April, 2013: The Charge d’Affairs (a.i.) of the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Washington D.C. returned from Columbus, Ohio, after a hectic three-day celebration of Sierra Leone’s 52nd Independence Anniversary.
Counsellor Aisha Sillah, also the Head of Chancery of the Embassy, flew to Ohio Thursday to honour an invitation extended to the Sierra Leone Ambassador to the United States to join the organizers, the Sierra Leone Club of Columbus Ohio and the Sierra Leonean community in that State to celebrate Independence.
The celebration started with a meeting at 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Friday between Mrs. Sillah and the Director of Minority Affairs, Lynn Stevens, and other dignitaries at the Ohio Governor’s office. Later on, after she made a brief speech, Mrs. Sillah was given the honour to hoist the Sierra Leone flag to mark the beginning of celebrations for the 52nd Independence Anniversary.
At 11:00 a.m. on Saturday 27th April 2013 (the Independence Day proper) the 52nd Independence Anniversary’s guest of honour took the kick off for the men’s and women’s soccer matches at the Westerville Parks and recreation Soccer Field. This was followed at 7:00 p.m. by a cultural entertainment, Dinner and Dance at the St. Mathias Hall, where she again gave a speech on behalf of the government of Sierra Leone. The Charge d’ Affairs (a.i.) said among other things that H.E. the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma declared Diaspora as the fifth province of Sierra Leone to underscore its importance to national development. She called on Diaspora to contribute in making the president’s Agenda for Prosperity a success.
On Sunday 28th April, Counsellor Sillah attended a Thanksgiving Service at the Blessed Assurance Bible Church and returned Monday, impressed and full of praises for the Sierra Leonean community in Ohio for their hospitality, unity, patriotism and organizational style.
Mrs. Sillah took over as Charge d’Affairs (a.i.) after the Chief and Deputy Chief of Mission both travelled to Sierra Leone Thursday on other engagements. Last year, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Ambassador I.S. Conteh, represented the Ambassador at the celebrations in Ohio.
