More Dynamics to Transform Agriculture in West Africa
The implementation of WAAPP, component 2 on the NCoS, aims at strengthening the infrastructure and human capacity of these centers to conduct quality research and improve their productivity to ensure food security, in line with one of the WAAPP principles. To date, under WAAPP, nine national centers of specialization have been created: NCoS on Rice in Mali, the NCoS on dry cereals in Senegal, the NCoS on roots and tubers in Ghana, the NCoS on plaintain in Coted’voire, the NCoS on fruits and vegetables in Burkina faso, the NCoS on aquaculture and fishery in Nigeria, the NCoS of maize in Benin, the NCoS on mangrove rice in Sierra Leone and the NCoS on livestock in Niger. These centers, in the process of becoming regional centers of excellence, need strong partnerships with international centers to exchange experiences.
Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Forestry, Dr. Sam Sesay, in the closing ceremony at Bintumani Hotel on Friday April 26th, of a conference on agriculture in West and Central Africa, said government is committed to improving agriculture in Sierra Leone and promoting increased finance through the banks. In the commercial loan perspect, agriculture gets 40%. Hon Minister noted that Sierra Leone’s production level has increased between 34-35%.
Executive Director CORAF/WECARD, Dr. Harold Roy Macauley, said the programme has brought together 14 member countries. The aim of this program is to develop agriculture by using production technologies and doing researches which will reduce poverty and increase food security, health and nutrition.
