Tomorrow is World Malaria Day
Mr. Shar Hemore of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, on Monday, April 22 said that World Malaria Day will create awareness raising and increase knowledge among the people of Sierra Leone.
Addressing Journalists at a press briefing held at the Grassroots Gender Empowerment Movement (GGEM) Building at 58 John Street, Freetown, he said that the World Malaria Day originated at the African Summit on Malaria in Abuja, Nigeria on 25th April, 2000, where African leaders from forty-four Malaria endemic countries, seeking to highlight the gravity of the Malaria situation on the continents declared the observation of the day as an annual event.
Mr. Shar Hemore also revealed that the at its 60th Session, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted that Day in order to highlight the devastating effects of the disease on not only Africa but also in other parts of the world.
He stated that the day is always commemorated every year on April 25 to create awareness about an ancient disease and the devastating effects it has on the lives of more than three billion people.
In his remarks, the Programme Manager, National Malaria Control Programme, Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, said that Government in its collective efforts with partners to control the Malaria disease, especially for the vulnerable women and children has made its treatment free at every government, clinic and peripheral health unit.
He said that they will engage stakeholders including the public and private sectors with business partners like the banks as well as the mining industries like Africa Minerals and London Mining to pledge their support in the fight against the disease.
