Put Sierra Leone first says SLPP MP
A senior Member of Parliament from the main opposition (SLPP), Hon. Ansumana Kaikai of Constituency 087 in the Pujehun District, Southern Region, has called on every Sierra Leonean to put national interest against all other interests and work assiduously towards the prosperity of Sierra Leone.
He made the call during an exclusive interview yesterday with Sierra Express Media at his office in Parliament Building in Freetown.
Speaking on unnecessary labour agitation, the MP wondered why the president has to intervene before lecturers agree to go back to class. “Is that not a failure on the part of the institution?” he asked.
The SLPP MP stressed that it is time to ensure that all those put in responsible positions should carry out their respective duties and not allow the president to perform their duties. “Why should we be having several labour organizations in place and allow the president to address aggrieved workers?” Ansumana Kaikai further wondered.
The SLPP MP’s remarks pointed to the recent lecturers’ strike action which took the intervention of the president to get them to suspend their strike action and return to the classroom. He expressed regret that students bore the brunt of the strike, urging labour congress and other trade unions to ensure a satisfactory bargain for the lecturers to avert future strikes.
