SLAJ Electoral Commission

11th April, 2013, Freetown, Sierra Leone: The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists Electoral Commission (SLAJEC) wishes to commend all candidates vying for various positions in the SLAJ elections for the peaceful and tolerant manner in which they have carried out their campaigns. However, all candidates are reminded that the campaign period has ended. In this regard, no candidate should engage in any activity construed to be a campaign activity. Any violation of this directive will lead to the disqualification of the candidate.

Meanwhile, a comprehensive list of eligible voters has been published by the Commission and a 48-hour window has been opened to accommodate petitions. This window will be closed on Friday, 12th April, 2013 at 5pm.

Moreover, all eligible voters are reminded to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the elections which the SLAJ Electoral Commission published on 20th March, 2013.

Further, the Commission wishes to inform members that the voting procedures would be published during the Biennial Conference. The Commission also requests that each candidate nominate a representative to serve as his/her agent on polling day.

The Commission wishes to inform SLAJ members that it received a petition on eligibility from Fomba M. Kanneh in the Eastern Region against Sam Alpha Lahai and Ibrahim K. Musa contesting for the positions of Public Affairs Secretary and Organising Secretary respectively. The Commission would like to inform SLAJ members that it has investigated the matter but sufficient evidence was not available to uphold the petition. The Commission has ruled therefore that Sam Alpha Lahai and Ibrahim K. Musa are eligible to contest for the positions of Public Affairs Secretary and Organising Secretary respectively.

Finally, the Commission would like to remind all SLAJ members that voting can be done by proxy as stated in the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the elections published on 20th March 2013.

The Commission would like to assure the entire membership of SLAJ of fair, credible and transparent elections, and therefore solicit the cooperation of every member to ensure a successful outcome of the elections.

Signed: Ransford S.C. Wright, Chief Electoral Commissioner
