Action Aid International Sierra Leone on Tax Justice

Action Aid International Sierra Leone (AAISL) has trained Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and their partners across the country on Tax Justice as a way of setting a solid foundation for its future work on critical tax justice campaign in the country.

During the three-days training at the Civil Service Training College, Tower Hill, Freetown, AAISL Governance Coordinator, Christian Lawrence, noted that the training is geared towards increasing the knowledge base of AAISL staff and partners on critical tax justice issues, especially as it relates to multi-national companies in Sierra Leone. He explained that Sierra Leone does not have sufficient revenue to invest in quality public services and other development interventions. He said tax avoidance and evasion as well as mis-pricing by multi-national companies mean the country loses more than it receives in aid each year. According to Mr. Lawrence, the loopholes in the country’s tax system cost the country a huge amount of money which could be spent otherwise for the good of the country.

He pointed out that by 2014, AAISL will launch tax justice campaign to ensue that government regularizes corporate taxes to make sure multi-nation companies pay their fair taxes to the government of Sierra Leone.
