At Gbalamuya… Traffic Wardens Become Immigration Officers
Information reaching this medium states that corruption is flourishing at the Gbalamuya Customs post at Kambia along the Sierra Leone-Guinea border where traffic wardens are reported to be now performing the functions of immigration officers by asking travelers for their passports, national identity cards and other travelling documents.
Reports reveal that travelers who fail to produce their necessary travel documents are taxed a certain amount of money before being allowed to cross the border. We have also gathered from affected travelers that officers in the search room, the health room and the immigration room are all involved in the massive extortion of money from travelers.
This reporter recently visited the border post where he witnessed the flagrant corruption perpetrated by officers deployed there to generate revenue and to protect this nation from illegal immigrants. Our reporter was asked by an unidentified traffic warden to produce his passport, national identity card and other travel documents and when he pretended not to have the documents, the money-hungry traffic warden demanded from him a bribe to allow him cross the border.
