Asians Arrested for Illegal Fishing in Sierra Leone
The Revenue Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) is reported to be investigating two Asians who were recently apprehended by ASP Bannister of the Tombo Police for allegedly carrying out fishing activities around the Tombo Area without registering their companies with the NRA, thereby depriving this nation of much needed revenue.
According to ASP Bannister, the two arrested Asians are, the proprietor of the Brother Fishing Company, Mr. Lee, who is a Chinese, and the proprietor of the Yang Quang Fishing Company, Mr. Cham, a Korean, both of whom have been handed over to the NRA for further investigation after spending some days in detention at the Tombo Police Station where statements were obtained from them.
Head of the NRA’S Revenue Intelligence and Investigation Unit, Assistant Commissioner Sheku Kamara has vowed that the NRA will impose triple penalty on the two Asians if they are found guilty after the investigation, describing tax evasion as an unpardonable offence that keeps sabotaging our crippling economy. The Assistant Commissioner said the unit was formed recently to serve as a sniffer dog to crack down on tax evaders.
