Retired Football Heroes Trip to Senegal… Doubtful

Retired National Football Heroes’ trip to Senegal scheduled this week  may be delayed due to lack of financial support. The heroes are to compete in the ECOWAS Football Veteran Competition.

Although representing Sierra Leone in ECOWAS competition, the government, Parastatals, business houses and individuals have neglected and marginalized the ex-football heroes.  The team is not respected on their home soil while competitors such as Guinea, Liberia, Mail, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania have been financed by their various governments, Parastatals, business houses and individuals.

The Retired Football Heroes maiden participation in the tournament was in 2009 in The Gambia and were eliminated in the knock out stages.  In 2010, Sierra Leone hosted the tournament and won it.  In 2011 in Mali, Sierra Leone was beaten in the grand finale by Mali 1-0 in extra time after a 0-0 full time.

The 4th edition in Senegal is a doubt as the team relies on promises of transportation, allowances for the 30 man delegation. Meanwhile, the team is expected to travel on Thursday 28th March 2013 and the tournament is expected to commence 1st week in April.

Will the likes of Umaru Din Sesay, Kama Dumbuya, Joseph Toby, John Alina Sesay, Abubakarr Tostao, Amidu Karim, Amidu Deen Koroma, De-Cox, Abu Sankoh and several ex-Leone stars legend suffer another disappointment while their colleagues in the sub region participate in ECOWAS Veteran Competition with smiles.

Whether the team will make it to this year’s competition will be known on Wednesday 27th March after the team’s final training session at the Kingtom Football Academy.

The retired National Football Heroes on 5 occasions have donated giant glittering gold trophies to His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on Independence and Inauguration celebrations but their generosity has not reflected on the welfare of the football legends by past and present governments.
