Sierra Leone Hosts 25th WAPCP AGM

12-14 March, 2013 Sierra Leone hosted a three day West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) Annual General Meeting and Scientific Symposium in collaboration with the Pharmacists Society of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on the theme ‘Opportunities and Challenges of Pharmacists in Maternal and Child Health,’ at the Miatta Conference Centre, Freetown.

The AGM attracted participants from Nigeria, Gambia, Senegal, Liberia, and Sierra Leone including Ministers, Members of Parliament and a total of 97 Pharmacist graduates in the West African sub region.  The event was climaxed with the awarding of certificates to the graduates.

The President for the Pharmaceutical Society of Sierra Leone Major Pharmacists, T W Tucker FPC Pharm MPSSL gave the welcome address statimg that the hosting of the WAPCP AGM is timely and significant in the history of Sierra Leone as His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma introduced the Free Health Care two years ago which serves as a reminder to all stakeholders of the challenges ahead to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, targeting maternal and child mortality across the sub region.

His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma performed the role at the official opening as special guest of honor and received the title of Honorary Fellow of WAPCP; adding that his government since in 2007 has been transforming the health sector to meet health and related challenges faced by the nation.

He formally declared the AGM open as he stated that the country has been producing professionals of postgraduates as the country has been a training ground for graduates that fly the flag of the country all over the world in saving the lives of people.

WAPCP president, Professor Fola Tayo FPC Pharm (UK) MFR revealed that the main objective of the college is to advance the knowledge and skills of practicing Pharmacists through postgraduate education and training and to promote specialized disciplines.

He also stated that the college has certified 700 student graduates and has facilitated the establishment of schools of pharmacy at the universities of Sierra Leone and Liberia and facilitated the recent lifting of the ban on Nigerian drugs in the sub region.

Professor Fola Tayo upon presenting the Honorary Fellow of the WAPCP to Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma appealed for His Excellency’s support to the governments of the sub region for the development of the sector.
