Africell Supports 20 Radio Stations
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Africell Telecommunications Company is supporting twenty radio stations nationwide; nine in Freetown and eleven in the provinces, with the provision of electricity and monthly subsidies.
However, the company has not revealed the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the radio stations, a source from the company intimates this medium.
According to one of the radio Station Managers, Africell deserves a license to operate a radio station as any other private business entity in the country as stipulated by law.
He made reference to other business entities that are operating radio stations and reiterated that with the company’s huge customer base and numerous promotions nationwide, it is but prudent that it operates its own radio station to entertain and educate them.
Furthermore, the company has contributed immensely to the development of the country through its corporate social responsibility like construction of the modern Clock Tower in Makeni, support to education, sports and health among others.
Another Station Manager reiterated that all Africell advertisements and support to both radio stations and newspapers are still ongoing pointing out that the country is operating a free market economy and observed, “look at AIT in Nigeria which has a TV station to market its products.”
He continued that for the purposes of confidentiality and security, Africell has its own printing press but does not undertake commercial printing and that inspite of this the company still contracts other printing houses to do large-scale printing maintaining that establishment of the radio station is not to put others out of business but on the contrary to increase partnership as the IMC and NATCOM Acts do to prevent the granting of a radio license to private business houses.
