Sixteen medical house officers recommended for appointment

Freetown, March  (SLENA) – The Director General of the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), Mr. Ernest Surur has called on doctors to have passion for life, noting that their sacred duty is to save lives.

Addressing 16 Medical House Officers recommended for appointment into the Civil Service at a ceremony held in the office of the newly established Health Service Commission in Freetown, Mr. Surur told the young doctors that they would be going through a probational period and implored them to be committed to their task.

He said passion to save life is their first responsibility and should be seen working above self, devoid of putting money as a priority. Money, Mr. Surur said, should be the last resort, noting that their reward as humanitarian professionals comes from God.

The Director General encouraged them to draw their inspiration from God with positive expectation, noting that being a medical doctor is complex, and that they should be ready to take the challenge in working under difficult conditions.

The HRMO, the Director General  said, is the brain for training, adding that training for the House Officers will be a specialist programme within the medical core, hoping that they would live up to expectation.

The Chairman, Sierra Leone Health Service Commission, Dr. Bundu Kamara dilated on the key functions of the Commission as well as its composition which he said consists of a six-man team drawn from the Chamber of Commerce, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), the Health Ministry and other institutions.

He described the House Officers as their clients since the inception of the Commission when established by an Act of Parliament in 2011.

Dr. Bundu said as a Commission they would be looking at remuneration and other Conditions of Service but that they also have the mandate to hire and fire within the legal framework.

He said they are working in close collaboration with the HRMO as a major pillar and encouraged the young officers to use the National Health Policy as a catalyst for accountability within the Health Ministry’s National Health Sector Strategic Plan.
