Health minister tours district hospitals

Freetown, March (SLENA) – Health and Sanitation Minister, Miatta Kargbo (center) has started her first familiarization tour to the districts with a view to assessing the level of service delivery and the status of the facilities in the various units of the hospitals.

Leading a seven-man team of health professionals, among them the Acting Chief Medical Officer, the Director of Hospitals and Laboratory Services and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, the Minister while addressing staff of the Makeni Government Hospital, underscored the importance of selecting the Makeni hospital as the first port of call.

She told her audience that the Agenda for Prosperity focuses on quality service delivery and hinges on the objective of her visit to identify the needs and challenges in the hospital with a view to finding solutions and the way forward through open and frank discussions.

Madam Miatta Kargbo expressed her determination to take the hospital to high level and encouraged staffs of the hospital to assist her achieve her goal by collectively working together as a team. The Minister reiterated that together they would be able to address the issues and appealed to them to redouble their efforts.

The Medical Superintendent, Dr. Modupeh Wilson, the District Medical Officer, Alhaji Dr. Yankuba Bah and the Gynecologist Consultant, Dr. Amir Taqi highlighted major constraints in the hospital which included non availability of water, inadequate supply of blood bags, equipping the Laboratory and Theatres, need for a Regional Blood Bank, human resource capacity and other key challenges.

Other speakers included the Director of Hospitals and Laboratory Services, Dr. Donald BashTaqi and the Director of Human Resource for Health, Mr. Prince Cole.

A conducted tour led by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Modupeh Wilson to various facilities in the hospital which include the Theatre, the Laboratory, Pharmacy, the X-Ray, Orthopedic Unit and different wards in the hospital formed part of highlights of the visit.
