Sierra Leone’s Kewullay Conteh banned for match-fixing
Veteran Sierra Leonean international Kewullay Conteh is serving a 20-month worldwide ban after he was found guilty of involving in match fixing relating to the 2011 Italian football scandal.
The ban took effect last June but it’s only now it has been sanctioned by World’s Football governing body, FIFA who has notified the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).
The 35 year-old defender was being accused to have agreed to fix a number of Serie B football games by receiving bribes while at AlbinoLeffe (2007-2009) together with teammates Filippo Carobbio, Paolo Acerbis and Joelson.
He was among 70 players and officials that were found guilty including a Cameroonian out 106 who were being investigated by the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC).
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has now extended the sanctions of the players worldwide after they were officially informed about the disciplinary actions by FIGC.
Conteh who has made many appearances for Sierra Leone last played for Leone Stars against Niger in March 2011 in a 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifying match in Niamey.
He was part of the Leone Stars team that represented Sierra Leone at the 1996 African Cup of Nations finals in South Africa in 1996.
It’s likely that it is the end of the road for the ex- Ports Authority FC and Real Republicans player who was the first Sierra Leonean to feature in the Italian Serie A League way back in 1996 when he was with Atalanta.
He played for several other Italian clubs such as Chievo Verona, Venezia, Palermo, Albino Leffe, Grosseto and Piacenza and also had a brief spell with Café Opera in Sweden.
