Nigeria Award Night, 2012
The Nigeria High Commission to Sierra Leone held its maiden Annual Awards Night, 2012, for distinguished cooperate institutions and individual Nigerians and Sierra Leoneans. The impressive ceremony took place at Family Kingdom Hall on Saturday, 23 February, 2013.
The Maiden Awards Night was to recognize Nigerians and Sierra Leoneans who have contributed to national development and to honour those who have played a part in deepening the diplomatic and friendly ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
During the dinner, the Nigeria High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Eyo Asuquo, when welcoming his quests, said they were awarding about 50 individuals and cooperate institutions, a number which he described as moderate as it was the first award night, promising that the awardees list will grow in subsequent years.
He said the privileged few represent others who played a part in strengthening the diplomatic ties between both countries in 2012. He revealed that the awards came from an order from the Nigeria Foreign Ministry which instructed that such awards be done in every Nigerian Embassy or High Commission, describing Sierra Leone’s award night as unique and promising to correct any mistakes in years to come. He called on all to support the transformation of Goodluck Jonathan and President Ernest Bai Koroma’s Agenda for Prosperity.
The guest of honour and chairman, Chief Protocol Officer to president, Sullie Daramy, said good diplomatic relation does not depend on the leader’s relationship alone, adding that it is, therefore, the responsibility of all awardees and even others to promote the diplomatic ties of these countries so that the awards will continue. He pledged the president’s commitment to continue strengthening and deepening the friendly and diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
Among the awardees are the Guaranty Trust Bank, Oranto Oil Sierra Leone Ltd, Vitafoam, and Afrik Air.
