Parliament swears in 124 members

The swearing–in ceremony of the newly elected 124 Members of Parliament (MPs) took place at the well of Parliament of Sierra Leone on December 7th, 2012.

The swearing in of the 124 elected MPs is the third Parliamentary Schedule the nation has had since the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone which ushered in democracy.

An election was carried out for the position of  Speaker of the House according to Section (79) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No6 of 1991 and Standing Order 8.  The election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament in accordance to section (80) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No 6 of the 1991.

Minority Leader of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Hon. Dr. Bernadette Lahai nominated Abel Nathaniel Strong as the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Dr. S.B.D. Dumbuya the Majority Leader of the All People’s Congress Party (APC) moved the motion.

The election of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament in accordance of section (80) of the constitution of Sierra Leone Act No6 of the 1991 and the Standing Order, Hon. Eric Koidoyoma of the SLPP nominated Hon Chernor Alpha Bah as the Deputy Speaker of the House, this was seconded by Hon Ibrahim Conteh.
