Sierra Leonean Women’s Situation Room says “Peace is in our Hands”

“Peace is in our hands,” this was the principal and paramount message of the Sierra Leonean Women’s Situation Room in a press briefing held at the Bintumani Hotel Conference Room Aberdeen, Freetown.

Lending her voice to the current issue, Mrs. Helen Bash-Tackie said the grace and passion which drives them is geared towards cementing and upholding the peace of the nation. The occasion witnessed a host of stakeholders and mavericks namely former president Raymond Sawyer of the Republic of Liberia, vice president of ECOWAS Tonia Mackintosh and others to grace the programme.

In her disclosure, Haja Alari Cole noted that their objective lingers on harnessing the political tool to create a peaceful and non-violent nation before and after the electioneering process. With the desired to increase female and youth participation in accordance with best practise and agreement with the UNSCR charter 1325.

She explained that their organisation is in coalition with 45 indigenous and international women’s organisations and groups, which they had trained and developed over 330 national and international observers, mostly women and youths.

She furthered that in purview they had provided an early warning system which aided the electioneering process to respond timely to issues raised by voters in some of the polling stations. This she said was in conjunction with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and the Sierra Leone Police Force (SLP). Maintaining that though the election recorded challenges but yet they aren’t strong to derail the process and outcome, noting the issue of increase women participation happened to be one of the plethora’s of challenges raised.

In her last words she said they are aware of the allegation of electoral fraud, such as ballot stuffing and people were disenfranchised, which she said were unnoticed to their observers in the exercise, noting that they will investigate such allegations.
