Joint Statement on Elections in Sierra Leone

Following is a joint statement issued November 20, 2012 by the Embassy of the United States of America and the British High Commission in Sierra Leone.

The United States and the United Kingdom congratulate Sierra Leone on holding its third election since 2002 – and the first since the war to be run entirely by national democratic institutions.

We welcome the largely peaceful conduct of the large numbers of Sierra Leoneans who turned out to vote in Saturday’s presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections.

As we await the official results, we call on all parties to continue to abide by the rule of law, renounce violence and incitement to violence and respect human rights.

The success of this election will provide a sound foundation for greater stability and economic progress, which are important to all Sierra Leoneans.
