Polio Vaccination for 1.3M Kids to Commence in Sierra Leone

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation together with Development partners will be carrying out National Immunization Days (NIDS) from 19-22 Oct to prevent under five years old children from Polio.

This was revealed at the conference room of Ministry of Health on October 16th 2012. Speaking to journalists, the programme Manger EPI MOHS, Dr Thomas T. Samba announced that it is good news that new cases of the polio disease have not been found in Sierra Leone over the last two years and they are not relenting because new cases of the polio are found in neighboring countries.

“And it seems even when they are making every effort to combat it, the disease is striving to survive. So this time the Ministry of Health will carry out two rounds of scrutinizedvVaccination”.

Dr. T T Samba said and furthered that the scrutinizing strategy vaccination will be carried out by 9 countries in West Africa. This means that these countries will carry out the vaccination at the same time to stop transmission. He noted that they will use the house to house approach to vaccinate all under five kids. He encourages parents to make the kids available from 19-22 Oct 2012 when the health team will be going around and stationed in every health clinic.

Dr, Pamela Mutula of WHO said as a donor they care about the health of the children and they are targeting 1.3 million kids in this campaign. She noted that routine immunization is the best way to prevent and protect children from polio.

The programme was chaired by Sidie Yaya Tunis.
