Sagent Pharmaceuticals generously donate chemotherapy medication to Sierra Leone
His Excellency Ambassador Bockari K. Stevens today received a donation of chemotherapy medication from Sagent Pharmaceuticals Inc, Chicago, Illinois, to the People of Sierra Leone.
The presentation ceremony took place in Chicago Illinois at the Honorary Consulate of Sierra Leone. Receiving the supplies, Ambassador Bockari Stevens thanked the donors for what was described as a very timely gesture, noting that treatment for cancer was a much needed intervention in health care delivery in Sierra Leone.
‘I humbly accept this generous donation on behalf of Sierra Leone. My appreciation is only exceeded by those who will benefit from this contribution’
While noting that the country has made significant progress in reducing infant and maternal mortality rate by increasing access to treatment through the elimination user fees for pre/post maternal care and under-five childcare delivery, Ambassador Stevens said that the Government of President Ernest Bai Koroma continues to address challenges in the health sector which remains a key priority in its national agenda. He mentioned that he was gratified that these improvements were being recognized by media publications in the United States and in Canada making references to articles published in the Globe and Mail in Canada and the Washington Post in the United States.
The Chemotherapy medication donated, 840 vials of Topotecan, is used in the treatment of small cell lung cancer by killing cancerous cells.
The donation from Sagent Pharmaceutical was facilitated by Dr. Ahnal Purohit of Purohit Navigation.
The ceremony was also witnessed by Dr. Ankur Purohit, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Chicago and a cross section of Sierra Leone nationals in Illinois.
Before agreeing to accept the cancer treatment drugs Ambassador Stevens conferred with the Chief Medical Officer in Sierra Leone who confirmed that this was a wonderful gesture to the people of Sierra Leone. The Ambassador further re-iterated that this was only the beginning as many companies have promised similar gestures in the future if adequate accountability can be guaranteed.
