The concept of attitudinal change has gone a long way, as Director of Attitudinal and Behavioral Change, Philip Conteh and team, on Thursday 24th September made a sensitization visit to the Ataya Base Youth Center along Sackville Street and Regent Street. “The main purpose of the visit is to take the concept of the ABC to every door step of the people as the concept is a top-bottom approach,” the director said.

Speaking to the youth’s ABC National Coordinator Alieu Kamara, who chaired the programme, he informed the youths that “Sierra Leone is a country that is rich in national and human resources, a country that has a very good past, but the problem affecting the country is the way people of this nation think about the country,” he said, adding that the culture of negativism that is in us as Sierra Leoneans, is making this country lack in terms of development.

Mr. Kamara urged the youths to take cognizance of the fact that Sierra Leone is the only country we have as we are have one flag and have the same identity card and passport. He called on the youths to be patriotic and nationalistic for the development of Mama Salone. “Our past leaders have failed this country as youths so the youths should work hard and embrace change for national development, and if the people of this country embrace change there is no need for the Anti-Corruption Commission,” he stated.

In his statement Mr. Philip Conteh expressed his heartfelt happiness for the work of youths in the community, for what he described as their brilliant ideas in forming an Ataya Base organization which he said is against drugs while cementing unity, love and peace amongst them. The youths are very important people in the country as they constitute over 60% of the population in the country, and that is why the need of attitude change is very good for them.

“If you embrace the attitudinal change concept, you people will certainly be the future leaders of this country,” he said, noting that “government knows the problems facing youths,” which he highlighted as “unemployment, education, poverty, and hunger. That is why the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma is working hard for the establishment of the National Youth Commission.” Mr. Conteh also advised the youths to refrain from drug addiction, gambling, stealing and prostitution for girls. “Youths should stop blaming other people as their destiny lies in their own hands,” he said.

Yusuf Dalhatu who spoke on behalf of the youths in his statement said that they form various Ataya Base organizations in their community to foster development amongst youths, but said that some people in the country are going with the perception that Ataya Base organizations are meant for idlers. This is the wrong perception we have lots of educated people, workers and college students amongst us.

He added that the formation of Ataya Base organizations and sites has created a lot of perception among youths, because they have lawyers, bankers, and even journalists and politicians as well as other professionals who sit with us and discuss issues that help transform the lives of illiterate and underprivileged youths.
