Rebecca Douglas spiked Julie’s shoulder and head with the pointed metal handle of a pintail comb after taking it out of her weave.
Douglas had been in custody for 15 months before she was found guilty and sentenced. The victim’s family moved to Britain in 2006 from Sierra Leone, West Africa, where her father, Raouf, served as a policeman, he told the court in a statement: ‘The result of seeing my beautiful, sparkling, bright daughter confined to bed in a vegetative state has left me extremely disheartened. The attack on my daughter was wicked, savage, and senseless.’
Julie Sheriff of Hackney, East London, did not recover from the swelling and bleeding to her brain and died nearly five months after the attack.
Judge Nicholas Cooke said Douglas killed Julie in ‘hate-filled fury’ after an argument over mobile phone messages.
Judge Cooke told her: ‘Your victim died a long, lingering death some months after you attacked her.’ Jonathan Kinnear QC, for Douglas, said she had a tough upbringing and had not meant to kill Julie.
