Don Bosco Fambul sentizes youths
The Don Bosco Fambul of 32-34 Fort Street on Friday organized a press briefing on life and living conditions for girls in Freetown, pointing out many areas the girls suffer from.
The moderator of the program was Madame Lydia Shears, a social worker HOPE-project for girls. Madame Shears stated that the Don Bosco Fambul is trying to eradicate the punishment young girls go through. In doing this, Don Bosco Fambul has already established various projects for disadvantaged and marginalized girls experiencing violence at different levels. Don Bosco Fambul also caters for the vulnerable and less privileged and also offers scholarships for school-going children and skills training for drop outs.
Madame Shears called on three girls to share their life experiences.

- Mabinty Kargbo – Forced into Prostitution
- Fatmata Sesay – Forced into Marriage
Mabinty Kargbo who was forced into prostitution explained how her parents died and no member of the family could turn to her aid whilst she was schooling. Mabinty hardly ate and could not even pay her school fees least talking about buying hand outs. In that way she was forced into prostitution to continue her education and nutrition. Mabinty thanks God for the timely intervention of Don Bosco Fambul who is now fully responsible for her well-being. Mabinty expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Don Bosco Fambul.
Mohamed Kargbo who is the coordinator of HOPE-Project for Girls said in his brief statement that Don Bosco Fambul runs a Girls Shelter which stands as a nonviolence contact and advice centre in Freetown for girls and young women aged between 8 and 17 years. All the time the girl’s shelter offers basic supply and care, like food and drinks, showers and laundry facilities, a place of relaxation, and above all opportunities for talking and getting in contact with others. Medical care and legal advice is offered by professionals like medical doctors, nurses, and lawyers.
Mohamed also revealed that the child line ‘116’ provides an opportunity for children and youngsters seeking advice to find discreet and competent interlocutors, who take them seriously in their respective situations, help them in an emergency and respect their anonymity. The phone counseling is available 24 hours every day and takes special the attention of girls’ issues.
