IRN receives and accepts the resignation of Radio Wanjei Station Manager

Freetown, 21st August, 2012: The Independent Radio Network (IRN) has received and accepted the resignation of Mr. Melvin Rogers, former Station Manager of Radio Wanjei representing the station on the network. Mr. Rogers told the IRN Station Managers meeting in Bo this month that ‘’he has been asked by his people to contest for the position of Member of Parliament in a constituency in  Pujehun under the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party.”

The IRN would like to inform the public that at its Elections Strategy Meeting in Kenema in 2010, the entire membership resolved that anybody wanting to contest for any position in the November 17th multi-tier and other future public elections must resign from the network. That position was further restated in a statement the IRN Board presented to the monthly meeting of the IRN Station Managers in Bo this month. The Board noted that “All members/stations with political interest and ambition should declare those now and officially resign forthwith.” The Board further notes that “IRN has over the years earned its reputation through its collective and collaborative approach …. This approach has provided protection and identity for all its members be they small, big or weak and it is critical that this hard earned reputation is protected and maintained as current challenges emerge.”

“While the Independent Radio Network knows that Mr. Rogers has the right to exercise his franchise, it also believes that the continuous stay of Mr. Rogers in the network after his declaration for a political party symbol will question its neutrality and impartiality in providing a balanced and accurate coverage for all political parties and aspirants” says Ransford Wright, IRN National Coordinator. ‘The IRN appreciates the time Mr. Rogers spent with the network and welcomes the new Station Manager of Radio Wanjei into the network” Mr. Wright adds.

The IRN would like to restate that it is determined to render its services in the public interest and its member stations would continue to work within the ethics of the profession.
