In Germany, Ambassador Stevens embarks on a meeting the people’s tour

Following the recent allocation of six million Euros to Sierra Leone by the German government, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany, H.E Jongopie S. Stevens has taken upon himself to meet stakeholders, community leaders and meaningful investors across Germany to inform them about the country’s development and encourage them to go and invest in Sierra Leone. His first stop was in Bad Wildungen, a town in the state of Hessen, at the west central part of Germany. The town is popularly known for its medical proficiency and academic discipline.

Receiving the Ambassador and his entourage, the Mayor of Bad Wildungen, Volker Zimmermann, expressed delight over the Ambassador’s visit and stressed the importance his community attached to it. “This is the first time we are hosting an Ambassador and we are happy to have you in our midst, and share knowledge about Sierra Leone, the people and its culture,” he said. He noted that his town which has about 17 thousand inhabitants with 20 medical hospitals is doing extremely well in the medical field, water and sanitation. This is why approximately 1.4 million guests visit the small but progressive town every year.

While assuring the Ambassador about his community’s tolerance and multicultural norm, the Mayor thanked Sierra Leonean born Doctor Obai Bureh Soulaiman, whom he said was the brain behind the visit. Doctor Soulaiman qualified as a surgeon in Germany, where he lived and worked in the medical profession for over thirty years. His excellent performance in the field of medicine and outstanding records including good interpersonal relationship with people in Bad Wildungen has earned him laurels. It was against this backdrop that he decided to facilitate the visit of Ambassador Stevens, to ensure that Sierra Leone taps some benefits in Bad Wildungen.

Responding to Mayor Zimmermann, Ambassador Stevens informed him and his people that his visit was geared towards providing adequate information about Sierra Leone’s socio-economic development programmes, and encouraging potential investors to take their business expertise to the country. He reiterated the bilateral relationship that exists between Germany and Sierra Leone, which he said was established soon after Sierra Leone attained independence in 1961. Since then he went on, Germany has been extremely instrumental in providing support for many development programmes in the country.

Ambassador Stevens making a point

He catalogued potential areas of development even though he said, tremendous efforts have been made by the APC-led government to address some of the challenges facing those sectors. They include among others, health, agriculture, energy and infrastructural development.

Ambassador Stevens emphasized that more effort should be made in addressing issues stalling development in Sierra Leone. He believes that Sierra Leoneans across the country should have equal access to basic social services, noting that more hands should be put on deck in an effort to help President Koroma realize his objectives.

Ambassador Stevens later met with Sierra Leoneans from Frankfurt, North Rhine Westphalia, Kassel as well as other development partners to discuss issues regarding investment opportunities in Sierra Leone.
