Mayor Herbert Williams and 5 cohorts convicted at High Court in Freetown, Sierra Leone
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today informed the general public that the Mayor of the Freetown City Council, His Worship, Herbert Akieremi George-Williams (in photo), the Chief Administrator, Bowenson Frederick Philips, and five others have been found guilty for various corruption and procurement violation offences at the High Court in Freetown, presided over by the Hon. Justice John Bosco Katutsi
The two other indictees, Arthur Kwesi-John, Deputy Chief Administrator, Freetown City Council, and Mohammed Allie Shabaan were acquitted and discharged.
The Commissioner of the ACC, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, welcoming the judgment, described it as momentous in the fight against corruption and said that today, our courts have reaffirmed that indeed in Sierra Leone, no man is above the law.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of the Freetown City Council, His Worship, Herbert Akieremi George-Williams, the Chief Administrator, Bowenson Frederick Philips, and five others have been remanded to Pademba Road Prisons awaiting sentencing to be delivered on Wednesday 15th August 2012.
It will be recalled that the trial of the Mayor and nine others commenced in the High Court in Freetown after an indictment on the 28th of November, 2011. The fight against corruption continues unabated.
