Row over FBC Students Rustication
Students of West Africa’s age-old university, Fourah Bay College, situated on Mount Aureole in Freetown, have taken a swipe at a decision varsity authorities took to rusticate 31 of their colleagues in various fields, in wake of the commencement of their second semester promotional exams.
The situation was rowdy on Friday August 3rd, as the aggrieved students barricaded the college campus with threats of closing down the administrative building. A barrage of protest actions were on, leading to road blocks all around the Mount Aureole vicinity. A hell-park of students queued up at the infamous helipad ground of the college, posing inscriptions: “No exams until the chancellor addresses our plights”.
A cross-section of affected students who spoke to Sierra Express Media said the University came up with the decision months ago, banning students from using the building due to ongoing rehabilitation exercises. The ban according to them was placed with blind consideration of the fact that some of the students were non-resident in the capital, Freetown.
The Student Union President Ceman Aliman Conteh had earlier pleaded with authorities of the university to reconsider their decision, but it ended as a fruitless endeavor.
Another angle of the story said the 31 expelled students have been the bane of chaos at the university. However, it is said the university has had a plethora of neglected issues to tend to, for example the issue of students’ identity cards is still unsettled as the university keeps issuing temporal card slips.
Meanwhile, the students’ body, reports say, have issued a 21 day ultimatum to restore calm to the once prided athems of West Africa.
