Over 1,149 Pupils Benefit from AML

As part of their corporate social responsibilities, African Minerals Limited (AML) handed over Le 180, 600,000 to the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Minkailu Bah, July 27th  for onward disbursement to Tonkolili, Bombali, and Port Loko Districts being the areas under which the company’s mining lease concession falls. The beneficiaries include the Members of Parliament representing the three districts and 1,149 pupils both in the various primary and secondary schools.

AML’s Corporate Manager, Mustapha Kamara said the money was presented to the various parliamentarians for the second phase of the school academic year. He said the verification of pupils beneficiaries by the various Members of Parliament was responsible for the delay in presenting the gesture, adding that the said cash is meant for the purchase of learning materials for the pupils and that they have paid each fee for the beneficiaries to the various school authorities.

He noted that each of these pupils is entitled to have Le 100,000 each from their MPs.

In the minister’s response, he applauded AML’s gesture and appealed to all MPs to make sure that they verify the pupils beneficiaries at an early time to avoid such delays in the future.

Minkailu Bah further pleaded with AML to increase the number of sponsorships in those districts. He said the sponsorship is granted twice per each pupil and failure to perform well in their schooling automatically disqualifies the pupil beneficiary.

He said a pupil is still eligible to make use of the scholarship if they make a change of school choice from their district to another.

The program was chaired by Minister of Mineral Resources, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray.
