Defending Champions Suba United win opening match in Airtel Rising Stars tournament

Midfielder Mariatu Conteh, one of the star players in the inaugural tournament last year was among the goal scorers as she netted from the penalty spot in a match they totally dominated. Attackers Matilda Mansaray and Aminata Bullon were the other scorers.

The victory has taken Suba United to the semi-final stage of the  ARS regional tournament in Makeni and will play on Saturday against another team from Makeni Nurse FC who defeated ABC Starlets of Kambia 3-2 on penalties after goalless at full time.

Suba United are strong favourite to win the regional tournament to qualify for the national finals also schedule to take place at the Wusum Field.

The other semi-final fixture also slated for Saturday is between Marampha Starlets of Lunsar and Makeni’s Rising Queens.

Patricia Umu Strikers were among five teams that exited the tournament on Friday paving way for Suba United, Rising Queens and three other teams to stay in the competition which continues to attract large crowd.

The other teams out of the tournament are three from the male category FC Super of Masiaka, Makeni’s Craig Bellamy FC and Allan Taba M’bang and one from the female category ABC Starlets of Kambia.

Two teams from Makeni Elbanko FC and Santos Maria together with Marforki Stars of Port Loko have formed group B of the boys category after their victories on Friday.

Elbanko thumped another team from Makeni Craig Bellamy FC 3-0 . Sufian Kaloko opened the scores in the first half whilst Bockarie Conteh and Santigie Kamara accounted for the second and third goals respectively in the second half.

An own goal by defender Alimamy Koroma gave Santos Maria a 1-0 victory over FC Super whilst Marforki Stars defeated  Allan Taba M’bang 6-5 on penalties after playing to goalless draw at full time.

The opening match in group B also took place on Friday between Elbanko FC and Santos Maria and it finished goalless.

The remaining group matches in the tournament will take place on Saturday alongside the two female semi-final games to determine the finalists in each category. The grand finale of the two categories will take place on Sunday.
