Police Break Silence Over News Blackout
Following the news blackout on media houses by the Sierra Leone Police Force, for what they referred to as misinterpretation by the media houses, Tuesday July 9th SLP called a press briefing at the police Headquarters George Street to intimate to the press over the recent spate of challenges facing the Sierra Leone Police force.
Head of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Karo Kamara, started by addressing the recent issue of a police shootout at Elk Street, Freetown pointing that the culture of lawlessness by youths has been the bedrock of this unfortunate incident, he said the military personnel named Kamara suspected some illegal activities going on within the vicinity when he attempted to affect an arrest to some youths who where seen smoking cannabis publicly but was over powered by the boys.
The CID boss said the military man reported the matter to the police officers at the Pademba Road police check point for reinforcement. He said the military man was marched alongside three police officers including one armed personnel to the crime scene.
He said that when the boys spotted the police they attempted to resist arrest acting on their numerical advantage by trying to unarm the police officer with the gun.
He explained further that as the brawl continue between the armed officer and some of the irate youths the armed officer fired five shots on the ground as a decoy to prevent him from being disarmed by the youths.
Mr. Kamara said it was at this point that some members were injured during the process; he said prior to comment being made be certain sectors of society that the police officer shoot at bay over those youths are considered as baseless and false.
Talking on the issue of double registration Assistant Inspector General of Police Keila Sesay said a total number of 794 cases of double registration have been discovered with the matter currently under investigation with the CID.
The AIG Keila Sesay also the head of Peace Keeping Operation said that a total of 31 police personnel currently have left the shores of Freetown for peace keeping mission in the Republic of Somalia and amongst these officers six of them are female police officers.
He went on to intimate the press that the Sierra Leone police under peace keeping mission are doing great noting that four senior police officers have been promoted to man professional posts. He said also that Sierra Leone has the third largest contingent of female officers in Darfur.
