I’LL BANG ‘EM IN … Bangura is confident he’ll score goals for Celtic if Lennon gives him a chance
MO BANGURA has vowed to prove he is no £2million Celtic flop.
The Sierra Leone striker arrived from AIK Stockholm last summer with a glowing reference from Hoops legend Henrik Larsson.
Bangura was hailed as the powerful frontman Neil Lennon craved — but he endured a nightmare debut season in Paradise.
He failed to net in 15 appearances and missed almost half of the campaign with a knee problem.
Bangura teams up with the Hoops squad this morning after being handed an extended summer break.
And he’s desperate to finally prove himself to the Parkhead faithful.
He told SunSport: “I can’t wait to go back to Celtic and start working again.
“I am looking forward to the new season and what it will bring.
“I feel the Celtic fans have still to see the best of me — they will hopefully see a lot more this year.
“I feel happy and I’m excited about the prospect of playing in the Champions League.”
Lennon is still thought to be in the hunt for a new striker.
He recently failed with a £3m bid for Latvian Artjoms Rudnevs — but has other options.
However, Bangura has pleaded with his gaffer for an extended run in the team.
He knows he faces a job to shift Gary Hooper, Anthony Stokes and Georgios Samaras from the starting XI.
But Bangura says he WILL bang in the goals — if Lenny throws him in.
The 22-year-old insisted: “If I get some playing time, then I can become a big success with Celtic.
“I want to help the team succeed and win more trophies after last season.
“But, most of all, I want to give the fans some joy.”
The Sierra Leone cap admits he went through some dark times last term.
As a young man alone in a foreign country, it proved a testing period.
But he insists he feels better than ever after a good break. And he hopes the start of a new season will signal better times ahead.
He said: “Last season was very frustrating for me, especially as it was my first at the club.
“But this is life — you never know what you will have to face. This is a new season and there are fresh challenges.
“I enjoyed my break during the summer. I played for the national team and then spent time with family and friends.
“It’s always good to be home having fun. I am feeling good now.”
Bangura was able to make one appearance before the end of last season after a three-month absence.
That 90-minute outing against St Johnstone mattered little in the grand scheme of things.
But, for Bangura, it signified the end of a hellish chapter in his career.
He said: “I felt a big sigh of relief when I recovered from my injury.
“I am now fit and I want to make a fresh start.”
Bangura spent the bulk of the summer in his homeland and was shocked to learn of Rangers’ liquidation.
He said: “I followed the Rangers problems a bit over the summer. It was a big surprise for me but we have to focus on Celtic.”
