The Coroner’s inquiry is relevant

Sierra Express Media is moved by a decision of the government to set up a Coroner’s Inquiry following the unforeseen circumstances which led two youths at Wellington to register their lives as martyrs. This initiative spanned also across the swathe of other incidences involving police’s excesses on harmless civilians with special bias on both the international and national laws on arms and their applications.

We continue to see in recent times the heavy scale of armed robbery and challenges which the Sierra Leone Police  face in the execution of their state sacred duties. The other day two policemen lost their lives whilst chasing common criminals at bay. Perhaps the crimes of these policemen were the loathsome pursuance of suspect bandits who were in possession of Class A drugs to such a trail.

These criminals found their ways in one of the buildings around the Eastern Police Division axis – a hideout in which both the policemen were stabbed to death.

Another incident took place wherein a certain police personnel was chasing a suspected thief down to the slums at Susan’s Bay, the policeman got trapped in pieces of metal where he was struck in a mud trap. He bled profusely to death.

On the equal side of it police were alleged to have shot two youths dead at Wellington, an Okada rider in the September 9 Maada Bio’s stone bursting incident in Bo and another recently at Lumley which all led into bitter commotions.

In both cases, first of all we have a problem with the use of arms by both the police and the armed robbers. – The police for the wrong use or implementation of the laws on arms and the armed robbers for the illegal possession of fire arms and ammunition and also putting them into their wrong uses.

Taking consideration of the fact that Sierra Leone is a war torn country, the issue of fire arms is a plume factor – that is sensitive for an immediate arrest. We don’t want to see a situation of arms taking order in the country – because we’ll begin to wonder what is the country’s new direction after the restoration of democracy, peace and tranquility by successive regimes.

In this common understanding we’ll need no police state neither an armed robbery state that would jeopardize our human existence as citizens.

Elections are fast approaching in November and one of the shortcomings we should not allow is the friction of violence and instability.

We at Sierra Express Media embrace the idea of establishing the Coroner’s Inquiry and wish to also underline the hard fact that outcomes that shall be recommended rising from the due process should be implemented to the letter so that a precedent is served right to the zeal of those who may want to emulate such bad examples.
