Magistrate denies bail to 27 accused persons
Magistrate Komba Kamanda has denied bail to 27 accused persons yesterday at Court No 2 on grounds of appeal made by the prosecution officer that the accused persons would interfere with the outcome of a court matter.
The twenty seven were arraigned in court on sic count charges of carrying offensive weapon without license, contrary to the Public Order Act of 1965, looting with intent and other related charges.
Some of accused persons pleaded guilty of the said act. Prosecution Police Sgt. 5704 Bangura G. attached to the Central Police Operations Department said on Wednesday June 13th this year, he was on duty when some concerned citizens called and gave him a tip-off that the accused persons standing trial were terrorizing them marauding as armed robbers.
He said he boarded a police vehicle with registration number SLP 006 along with twenty other colleague police personnel. The said they succeeded in arresting the 27 accused persons in the following areas: Waterloo, Texaco Junction, Ferry Junction, Abacha Street, and Kinghaman Road. He said the accused persons were arrested with offending weapons including knives, giant cutters and machetes which he said the accused persons confessed that they used in carrying out their deadly night robbery missions.
In summing up his verdict Magistrate Komba Kamanda said considering the increased rate of armed robbery the accused should remain behind bars until they are proven guilty or innocent.
