It could be recalled last year during the launching of the Calaba Town Progressive Youth Organisation (CPYO), Dr. Abboud promised to address the need of the water shortage in the community following an appeal by members of the CPYO.
The diplomat was received on Friday at the community by the Goodwill Ambassador of Calaba Town Murtala Mohamed Kamara and the Executive and membership of the CPYO.
Chairman of the CPYO Alhaji Bangura welcomed Dr. Abboud to the community and thanked him for answering to the call of the community. Mr. Bangura said the hand pump well which Dr. Abboud will be constructing is part of his organization’s six- month plan following the launch of the CPYO last year.
Bangura said CPYO was formed late last year to address some of the pressing issues affecting the Calaba Town community. He said since its formation, the organization has held successful developmental programs that gear towards community development.
He said the CPYO has demonstrated that it is a formidable organization which is there to compliment the efforts of others. He highlighted some of the challenges of the community including the poor state of the community clinic.
Speaking on behalf of Chief Ya Almamy alias ‘Ontension’ Mr. Joseph Conteh reminded the gathering that Calaba Town community is under-developed and that the problem of water has been a serious concern for the community.
On behalf of Chief Ya Almamy, Mr. Conteh thanked Dr. Abboud for making a dream come true. He also thanked the CPYO for such developmental strides. Similarly, Chief Mannah Bendu, the Sherbro Chief thanked Dr. Abboud and openly sang a song of praise for him.
Chairman of the Youth Development Movement (YDM), Mr. David Yambasu lauded the effort of Dr. Aboud for especially making the women of Calaba town very happy as according to him they are the most vulnerable in terms of the water crisis in the community. He revealed that other social and developmental youth groups were formed in the past but CPYO seemed to be the best as they have created a lasting landmark.
He assured all that he will continue to work with the youths to develop that community.
Goodwill Ambassador for Calaba Town, Murtala Mohamed Kamara who was the architect of the program thanked Dr. Abboud for responding to the needs of his community. He said young people have demonstrated that they can lead and compliment the effort of others if they speak with one voice.
Kamara told Dr. Abboud that despite the present state of the community he is happy to inform him that he is proud to say he is from Calaba Town. “Dr. you have witnessed firsthand some of the challenges of this community. You already saw the bad road network while driving through to this hall. Despite all this, I am happy to say I am from this community and Calaba Town has contributed a lot to who I am.”
He thanked Dr. Abboud for the proposed hand pump well and further declares him a ‘Friend of Calaba Town’. He said water is just one aspect of some of the other challenges of the community and therefore urged him to be a partner in developing Calaba Town.
Kamara called on the youths of the area to continue making themselves more viable for development and also stated that the well belongs to the community and should be accessible by all after the construction.
Dr Abboud lauded the efforts of the of the CPYO youth organization who has decided to work earnestly in order to ensure that they take part in sustainable community development around the Calaba town vicinity.
“This is not the first time I have assisted deprived communities in Sierra Leone,” he said. He remarked that he had constructed a bridge linking two areas at Kamayamah at Lumley and a host of other things, noting that the people of Kamayamah appreciated the construction of their bridge.
The philanthropist also said that as a businessman who has lived in Sierra Leone since 1975, it is his duty to help the people of Sierra Leone as a way of obeying his corporate responsibility. “When I was approached by the youths to help them undertake this project, I wasted no time to give them my support,” he stated, adding that because it concerns development and not for the benefit of one single individual.
Mr. Aboud went further by calling his fellow businessmen to continue honoring their corporate social responsibilities by undertaking indelible development drives that will make Sierra Leoneans to start considering them as stakeholders in national development.
He also promised to coordinate with some organizations abroad for medical equipment for the Calaba Town Health Center as it was another area of concern noted by the youths that they needed help. The business tycoon declared his door open and assured the CPYO that he will continue to support development in their community.
The program was climaxed by the turning of the sod for the construction of the well.
