African Union deploys an observer mission to Libya
Libya, Tripoli, 2nd July 2012 – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, is deploying an election observation mission to Libya to observe the General National Congress Elections scheduled to be held on schedules to take place on the 7th July 2012.
The AU Observer Mission is led by H.E Dr. Essam Sharaf, former Prime Minister of the Egypt and is expected to make an independent and impartial observation of the electoral process in Libya.
The AU mission expected to be deployed across the country includes personalities, representing the AU member states, the AU Commission, officials of national electoral bodies, and representative of Civil Society in Africa.
The AU will observe the election within the spirit and letter of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance which entered into force on 15 February, 2012; the Durban Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, as adopted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in July 2002; African Union Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring, and the Laws of the people of Libya.
While in Libya, the AU Observer Mission will meet with Libya electoral stakeholders, including the election management body, political entities and candidates, representatives of civil society, and members of the international community.
