The AUC and the Kingdom of Bahrain consider development of mutual cooperation
Addis Ababa, 28th June 2012: A Delegation from H.R.H. the Prime Minister Court, Kingdom of Bahrain, headed by H.E. Shaikh Hussam Bin Essa AL Khalifa, President of H.R.H. the Prime Minister Court, in response to an invitation from the AUC, visited the African Union Commission on 28 June 2012.
The visit sought to promote and enhance the relations between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Kingdom of Bahrain, in light of the mutual desire of the two sides to develop and widen their ties of cooperation in various fields.
Welcoming the delegation, Ambassador John Shinkaye, Chief of Staff, Bureau of the Chairperson of the AUC, indicated that the African continent has excellent relations with the Arab world that have progressed significantly in the last few years.
Ambassador Shinkaye expressed the AU’s desire to improve its relations with the Kingdom of Bahrain and its willingness to work closely for the development of bilateral cooperation in areas of common interests. He also stated that the AU welcomes with profound gratitude the forthcoming visit of H.R.H. Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, in which the H.R.H. the Prime Minister will be received and awarded for his longstanding contributions to the regional and global peace and security. Contact between the two sides will continue to agree on a date for this visit.
The President of the Court conveyed a verbal message from H.R.H. Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minter of the Kingdom of Bahrain, to H.E. Dr. Jean Ping, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission regarding the joint cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the African Union Commission and African countries. Shaikh Hussam bin Essa Al Khalifa expressed his country’s commitment to enhance the capacity of the AUC as well as its support for the efforts aiming at achieving sustainable development in Africa. He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain is looking to intensify its cooperation with the African continent. In this respect, it is considering to establish a delegation to the AUC in Addis Ababa as well as to open embassies in African countries.
The two sides were conscious of the important role they play in the world and agree to intensify discussions aiming at enhancing political and economic cooperation between Africa and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Both sides stressed the fact that they will continue to strive for increased economic development, peace and security as such harmonious policies will further strengthen the joint cooperation.
Also discussions between the two sides focused on possible support to the Pan African University, as well as cooperation in the area of infrastructure, trade, investment, agriculture, communication and information, civil society, Diaspora and peace and security, which were described as “priorities for Africa” by Amb. Shinkaye. An agreement has been reached to have a Memorandum of Understanding to further expand cooperation and the sharing of experiences in those fields between Africa and the Kingdom of Bahrain, which could be signed during the visit of H.R.H the Prime Minister of Bahrain to the African Union.
Also present at the meeting were directors, heads of divisions and officials from the different pertinent departments of the AUC, who presented briefs on their departments’ activities.
