Chavez Foundation Commemorates June16 with Rosinte Community

The Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity on Saturday June 16, 2012 commemorated the Day of the Africa Child at Rosinte in the Bombali District Northern of Sierra Leone.

The international Director, Alimamy B. Sankoh said the Day of the Africa Child was not a day to celebrate but a day of remembrance and to draw lessons from what happened in Soweto, South Africa, some 34 years ago.

He said the day is commemorated every year on June 16, in remembrance of the 1976 brutal massacre of thousand of Children in Soweto, whose crime was only for their peaceful march demanding and end to racism in the educational system that was operating in the then South Africa apartheid rule.

He said their gathering on that day, is more than just a commemoration but rather seek to draw the attention of all actors to improve the conditions of children on the continent and to unite their effort to combat the many ills that plague the daily lives of Children in the sub-region.

Alimany B. Sankoh said it is also an occasion for governments, International Institutions and communities to deal with delicate conditions of Children by organizing activities to condemn the many forms of crimes against humanity in the Africa Continent. Explaining why they choose Rosinte in the Bombali District, the Director said on February 3rd  of this year it was at Rosinte  the organisation has a farm and food production program called (Operation till the Land and feed the people) which he said has rekindled the hopes of farmers across Africa.

Abdul Sam Sesay of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), a worker at the Human Right and Environment affairs, Josephine Keita, and Child Welfare and Disable Officer, Abigail M. Kamara all said the foundation intends to make global assessment of this commemoration and  also intends to play its role in working with states actors to ensure better protection for children, adding that, there are urgent needs for the organization to make concrete steps to re-assure the Children of their desires to build  the type of Africa they deserves.

These speakers said to honour the memory of the thousands killed in the Soweto massacre in 1976 and to guarantee a decent future for Africa Children, Chavez Foundation is calling on Africa states, Civil Society Organisations and the private sectors to tackle child and maternal mortality, schools drop out, Gender inequality in universal Primary School Education with parents ensuring that their Children have better education.

The beneficiaries at Rosinte (Children) thanks the foundation for educating them on the significance of the June 16th  noting that the Chavez Foundation is the first in the history of the district to have embarked on such a venture as many other foundations do concentrate their programs and activities in the capital Freetown.

Meanwhile, the commemoration was climax with presentation of learning materials done by the Director of gifts, Staff Esther Aminata Zorokong to the people of Rosinte.
