Forfeiture of SLAJ membership

Freetown- The National Secretariat of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has observed with dismay the lack of commitment of some of its members to honour their membership dues. With its many commitments, SLAJ cannot function without members paying such dues.

In this light it was unanimously agreed at the 2012 SLAJ Annual General Meeting in Bo, that all defaulters should be treated according to the provisions of the SLAJ constitution and be made to lose their membership by the end of May 2012.

In a recent meeting the National Executive decided to extend that deadline to 30 June 2012 to give time to the message to sink well. The Secretariat therefore wishes to remind all members about the constitutional provisions and penalties for non-payment of membership dues, as enshrined in the SLAJ Constitution Article 8 (c), cited below, and as agreed by the most powerful body of the Association – Annual General Meeting:

“The membership of any person whose contributions are more than six months in arrears…shall lapse. The name of such a defaulting member shall be struck off the roll of members after giving him 30 days notice. To be readmitted thereafter, he/ she shall pay a penalty as prescribed by the executive on the recommendation of the house, in addition to payment of all arrears”.

In lieu of the above provisions and the General Assembly’s mandate, this press release serves as an official 30-day notice to the general membership that with effect from Wednesday 19 July 2012, members are strongly encouraged to upgrade their status and meet their membership obligations on or before 18 July 2012.  All those who have not paid their dues for one year and above, will have their names struck off the register and by consequence shall cease being members of the Association, unless, as provided for in the constitution, such members are Founding Members.
