NEC reports on the Biometric voter registration fraud

Freetown, 18 June (SLENA): The National Electoral Commission has disclosed to journalists at a press briefing at its head office in Freetown that 794 people were discovered to have fraudulently engaged in multiple voter registration during the biometric registration exercise in March this year.

Making the disclosure, NEC’s Chairperson, Madam Christiana Thorpe said the northern region had the highest number of fraud cases with Koinadugu and Bombali districts recording the highest.

Koinadugu District, she went on, had 96 cases while Bombali had 80 of such cases, adding that 9,096 were found to be technical voter duplication while 9,890 were possible fraudulent cases.

Dr Thorpe pointed out that the 794 duplicate cases would be addressed during the exhibition process to be held simultaneously in all the 2,998 voter registration centres now turned exhibition centers nationwide.

Dr Thorpe said NEC has recruited 8,994 Exhibition Officers and 394 Inquiry Officers and that the distribution of voter ID card will commenced on 9th July 2012 and ends on 16th of same.
