Makeni hosts Second National Communication workshop on climate change
Makeni, 18 June (SLENA): The Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation in collaboration with UNDP has held its second national communications sensitization workshop on climate change project in Makeni.
The workshop, which was held at the Makeni city Hall, focused on reading the results of the Impact and Vulnerable Assessment of Climate Change in Sierra Leone, and also to give opportunity to the people of the Northern Region to make their inputs to the assessment report.
The Climate Change Project Coordinator, Dr. Reynold Johnson, gave an overview of the climate change project and highlighted the eight sectors which the assessment reports covered.
Reading the result of the assessment on the agricultural sector, which is one of the eight sectors of the assessment, Mr. Johnson drew the attention of participants to the implications of the projected climate change in Sierra Leone on the temperature.
“There will be a gradual increase in temperature and that would have adverse effects on the local food crops grown in the country,” he noted, adding that the increase in temperature would result in decline in yields for annual crops such as rice, cassava and groundnut.
He told participants that some communities in Sierra Leone have started experiencing the impact of climate change, such as flooding and landslide at the Kroo Bay and Mountain Cut communities in Freetown.
Mr. Johnson however said the country can still adopt certain strategies to tackle these implications on the agricultural sector, stressing that his institution would be making recommendations to the Government of Sierra Leone and the international community, the major stakeholders in the climate change project, to mitigate the impact.
